Renovation and extension of a ground floor apartment

Positive Space, herenhuis - studie

HW583

This project involves the renovation and extension of an Amsterdam apartment, with the southern orientation of the garden as the focal point. By replacing load-bearing walls with a sleek steel structure, a bright and open living space is created, offering a strong connection between the living room, kitchen, and garden. The addition of an extension and the reconfiguration of the bedrooms and amenities result in a contemporary home where light, spaciousness, and outdoor living take center stage.

The project involves the complete renovation and expansion of an Amsterdam apartment, with the south-facing garden as the focal point for the design. The unique shape of the building block allows for abundant daylight and a generous living space at the rear of the house.

By replacing load-bearing walls with an elegant steel structure, an open and airy floor plan has been created. This intervention not only enlarges the living room but also imparts a strong architectural character.

On the garden side, an extension has been realized with the kitchen and a flexible workspace. A custom-designed oak frame directly connects these spaces with the garden, enhancing the relationship between inside and outside.

The bedrooms are positioned on the street side, while the bathroom, wardrobe, and toilet are compactly organized around the central hall.

The result is a contemporary home where light, openness, and connection to the outdoor space come together in a clear and harmonious composition.

Sustainability is an integral part of the design. The house is equipped with an air-source heat pump, allowing for efficient and gas-free heating and cooling. The existing floor has been replaced and fully insulated to meet new construction standards and features underfloor heating, while all exterior walls have been enhanced with high-quality insulation. The roof extension is finished with a sedum roof, contributing to water retention, biodiversity, and improved thermal performance. New window frames come with integrated sunshades to prevent overheating and further minimize energy consumption.

Moreover, the intelligent floor plan offers the possibility to easily add an extra bedroom; all electrical connections are already prepared for this, enabling the house to seamlessly grow with the needs of its residents.

OAK WINDOW FRAME

The custom-designed frame, measuring 7.5 meters wide, is crucial for creating the indoor-outdoor connection with the garden. The frame is shaped as a large box, 45 cm deep, containing three identical windows in terms of dimensions. Additionally, a vertical façade grille has been applied to regulate natural ventilation. The choice of oak wood was made to add a natural, warm finish to the home, contrasting with the concrete floor and the visible steel structure.

Because the frame faces south, sunscreening is integrated into the outside of the glass flush within the oak frame. This effectively keeps the sun's heat outside.
